Home cameras can monitor the home environment in real time and are becoming more and more popular among consumers. However, the risk of privacy leakage of such products has also attracted much attention. Recently, the comparative test results of 15 home camera samples released by the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Consumer Rights Protection Committee showed that there are common information security risks in the use of home camera APPs, and only 2 of the 15 samples met the recommended national standards in all tests. .
Online product quality is relatively poor
Tang Chuyao, secretary-general of the Guangxi Consumer Council, told reporters that the samples for this comparative test were purchased from physical stores and e-commerce platforms, including Puffin (Huawei), Xiaomi, EZVIZ, Lenovo and other brands, with unit prices ranging from 150 yuan to 415 yuan. etc. Among them, 6 samples were purchased in offline physical stores and 9 samples were purchased on e-commerce platforms.
This comparative test adopted the method of laboratory testing of electrical safety indicators, APP information security indicators and subjective experience evaluation, and conducted a comprehensive test and evaluation of 11 index items of 15 samples.
In the “Electrical Safety Index” test item, five samples of China Vision, Oxy Hunter, Small Value, Lei Weishi, and Rubik’s Cube Bird did not meet the relevant electrical safety index standards.
In the “marks and instructions” test item, three samples of China Vision, Oxygen Hunter, and Rubik’s Cube Bird did not meet the requirements of national standards.
In the test items of “electrical clearance, creepage distance and insulation penetration distance”, “electrical clearance” and “creepage distance”, three samples of China Vision, Oxygen Hunter and Leiweishi did not meet the requirements of national standards. This indicator mainly assesses the protective effect of insulation. If it does not meet the standard, it may cause risks such as electric shock during use.
In the “electrical strength test” test item, three samples of Huashiji, Oxygen and Leiweishi did not meet the requirements of national standards. This indicator mainly assesses the protective effect of insulation. If it does not meet the standard, it may cause risks such as electric shock during use.
“The quality of home cameras sold online is relatively unreliable.” Tang Chuyao said that among the 9 home camera samples purchased on the e-commerce platform, the electrical safety indicators of 5 samples did not meet the national standards, accounting for more than 50%.
13 samples have information security risks
In this comparative test, the APP information security indicators of 15 home camera samples were tested, referring to the recommended national standard GB/T35273-2020 “Information Security Technology Personal Information Security Specification”, targeting the “minimum necessary to collect personal information” and ” The two projects “Authorization and Consent when Collecting Personal Information” were tested and compared on iOS and Android systems respectively.
The test results show that there are common information security risks in the use of APPs of 15 home camera samples. In the APP information security test project, only the two samples of EZVIZ and Cube Bird meet the recommended national standard requirements; Haier, Puffin (Huawei), China Vision, Xiaomi, ZTE (ZTE), TP-LINK, etc. Some items of 12 samples do not meet the recommended national standards; all items of one sample “Lenovo” do not meet the recommended national standards.
“The 13 sample APP software collects personal information in violation of regulations and collects information without the user’s authorization and consent, which obviously poses information security risks.” Tang Chuyao said that privacy is no small matter, and the security of home camera information cannot be ignored. If information leakage occurs, It will bring greater risks to consumers.
In terms of subjective experience evaluation, 15 samples were tested by the testing agency to simulate indoor environments and use the same mainstream brand terminal equipment to restore home usage scenarios to the maximum extent under the same network conditions. The sensitivity of the samples’ APP installation operations and operational responses during use , compare the imaging clarity presented on the terminal device. The results showed that 2 samples of Puffin (Huawei) and Lecheng performed well and were rated 5 stars; 6 samples performed well and were rated 4 stars; 5 samples performed well and were rated 3 stars; 2 samples performed averagely , rated 2 stars; 1 sample “Rubik’s Cube Bird” performed poorly and was rated 1 star.

Try not to authorize permissions that do not affect the use of the product.
Tang Chuyao, secretary-general of the Guangxi Consumer Council, reminded consumers that when choosing a home camera, they should check or ask the merchant whether the product packaging is complete, whether the logo is neat, and whether the instructions are detailed and detailed. Choose a home camera with high imaging resolution that is easy to install and use, and is sensitive. .
“When installing APP software, pay attention to the information acquisition and authorization instructions prompted, and try not to choose authorization for permissions that do not affect the use of the product.” Tang Chuyao said that home camera products circulating on the market have security risks of information leakage, and consumers should not install them when installing. , Pay attention to minimize over-authorization when using it. At the same time, you should regularly update and install software and scan and anti-virus, try not to log in to the public network to view monitoring, and provide multiple protections for private data to prevent data leakage.
