This singer, who is rarely known in China but whose songs have long been famous in the Chinese-speaking world, is the legendary singer-songwriter of Japanese pop music, Koji Tamaki.
Koji Tamaki was born in Kamiyacho, Asahikawa City, Hokkaido in 1958. He made his debut as the lead singer of “Safe Zone” in 1982. With the single “Wine Red Heart”, he successfully entered the NHK Red and White Song Festival in Japan. His original “Tamaki-style singing voice” “Rapidly swept the Japanese music scene in the 80s.
“Wine Red Heart”, “Premonition of Love”, “Farewell to Sadness”, “Don’t Go” and many other songs have been covered by many Hong Kong singers such as Alan Tam, Danny Chan, Cai Guoquan, Leslie Cheung, Jacky Cheung, etc., indirectly achieving the golden decade of Hong Kong’s music scene. In 1996, Tamaki Koji began to write lyrics, and created many classic works such as “Paradise” and “MELODY”. Among them, “Pastoral” became the best-selling single in his personal and safe zone history. He also appeared in the Red and White Song Festival for the first time in his personal capacity, with an audience rating of 60%, the highest among singers and artists.
In 2012, Koji Tamaki established his own record company “SALTMODERATE”. The following year, he took the band “Safe Zone” to hold a concert tour in Hong Kong, and Hong Kong singers came to join him. In his opinion, songs are like stars, shining in the sky, and every song deserves to be stared at and loved.
In 2015, cooperated with well-known orchestras at home and abroad to perform the symphony concert Billboard Classisc. Then he jointly launched the orchestral work “Song of Joy” with the Balkan Chamber Orchestra. His warm and vigorous “Jade-style singing” naturally fits with the classical interpretation method, and the two complement each other, hiding deep feelings in the grandeur, which is intriguing.
In 2017, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his personal debut and the 35th anniversary of the “Safety Zone” debut, the 35th anniversary concert of the “Safety Zone” was held at the Nippon Budokan. The audience reached 25,000 within two days. The “Safe Zone” concert was held after 30 years, and the number of people present reached 38,000.

This special concert was held at the Blue Tower Noh Theater in Tokyo. In Japanese traditional culture, the Noh Theater is known as the Noh stage where gods and humans meet. Koji Tamaki will appear in traditional Japanese costumes that night, and will perform without an audience for the first time. Songs from his self-cover album “Chocolate Cosmos” released in December 2020 will be performed. Tamaki Koji and the Orchestra will re-adapt the song to highlight the texture and weight of the lyrics and melody. Finally, there will be a live a cappella of the famous song “Pastoral”. The ingenious design will give it a new artistic life and touch people’s hearts.
