For the past few months, I have been thinking hard about the problems of the twilight years of my life. As a doctor, I have direct contact with many people’s “birth, old age, sickness and death” problems every day. I have been a doctor for so many years, and I am deeply saddened to see so many patients slowly getting old and passing away.

Thank you before dying

Think about it, I am also walking the same life path! Maybe it happened that several elderly patients whom I had treated for many years died of serious illness recently, which made me feel infinitely moved, and I couldn’t help but think of that kind and amiable elderly patient.

He is an 85-year-old man, and I have been treating him with various chronic diseases for more than ten years. He suffered from chronic kidney failure for a long time, and his kidney function declined more and more as he got older. I have tried my best to control his disease with all the drugs for many years, but his condition is still getting worse with age.

I fight the disease side by side with him, he has absolute trust in me, because of his trust, the burden of responsibility on my shoulders is even heavier! Our doctor-patient relationship has slowly developed into a friend.

Due to old age and sickness, he and his family have decided not to use “dialysis” (hemodialysis) to continue to maintain a weak body. He knew that his days in this world were numbered, and he was very open about life and death, without complaining or blaming others. He just quietly watched life wither day by day, silently waiting for the last moment of life to come.

Every time he came for a follow-up visit, he asked me when I would be able to get out of this world of suffering and return to heaven, but I was always speechless with emotion. However, I believe that God favored him very much, allowing him to have a daughter who took care of him meticulously, and relieved countless sufferings in the world.

His end-stage renal disease has also tormented him for more than a year without knowing it. He didn’t come for a follow-up visit for several months, and my busy medical work also forgot about him.

That day, after a long day at the hospital, I unexpectedly received a call from his daughter, informing me that he had passed away peacefully that morning. Before he died, he ordered her to call me to express his final thanks. I was very touched that he could still think of thanking me at the moment before he died, and I was also gratified that he was finally freed from the sea of suffering. I am grateful for his trust in me as a doctor and his encouragement to continue practicing medicine with enthusiasm.

give listening and compassion

When life comes to an end, what a doctor can give a patient is no longer healing. For these dying patients, all I can offer is listening and compassion, but maybe this is enough for them!

The famous Chinese female writer Yang Jiang died at the age of 105. She once gave a centenary speech, and these few words touched me a lot: “We have longed for the waves of fate so much, only to find that the most beautiful scenery in life is the calmness and calmness of the heart. Old age is the beginning of a better life , It is a state of calmness, tranquility, and leisurely leisure. May we maintain a peaceful heart, expect less, be more tolerant, be unaffected by favor or disgrace, leave or stay without hindrance, smile forward, and be kind to ourselves in our old age.”

Share it with the aging patients and yourself!
